Week 9 - Preparing for submission

When preparing for my final submission, I decided to create further iterations of my previous models.  Using paper found at home, I experimented with different folding and cutting techniques to communicate my creative ideas. In particular, I played with the effect of light on the interior and exterior spaces.

This model has two thresholds, with a transitional space for access. The differently designed screens, in place of walls, cast shadows into the interior space.

This model combines curvilinear materials with straight edges to juxtapose the appearance of man made and natural elements. Similarly with my other signs, the paper is cut to produce interesting shadows and light. There are three main thresholds within the model with a hallway connecting the the three of them.

This model experiments with a new texture (book paper), and the way this communicates a different narrative in the interior walls. The two-storeys are connected by a staircase. The second storey opens to a balcony, challenging the realms of the internal and external space.

Week 8 - Studio Activities - Photoshop

I added textures to an image of my week 7 light model (below).

Individual Photoshopped images

1. Marble facade with mirror panelling
  • sturdy building material
  • ancient and contemporary connotations
  • clouded mirror to reflect environment

 2. Seamless white oak, mahogany, blue-tinted glass
  • unique natural texture
  • practical building properties
  • glass windows to allow natural lighting

3. Grey concrete/graffiti, brick facade
  • inspired by an urban city landscape
  • chose environment due to sentimental values, photograph is from my dad's hometown

Week 8 - Online Tutorial - Fusion 360 Materials

Fusion 360 - 3D shape

This week, I applied material appearances to the 3D shape of my initials (JHC) made in Fusion 360 last week.

The default appearance:

Material Combination 1:

  • silver-polished
  • glass- heavy colour
  • glass-clouds
I wanted this first combination to be highly reflective of its surroundings and look almost weightless. The two different types of glass also plays with the degree of transparency.

Material Combination 2:
  • oak- semigloss
  • gemstone- diamond
  • mahogany
My second combination has more natural elements of wood and minerals. The inner mahogany is a richer red colour compared to the lighter oak finish of the exterior. The diamond highlights the faces of the initials.

Material Combination 3:
  • fabric (denim, yellow, red)
The third material combination was inspired by vintage streetwear. The primary colours are sharp and contrasting.

Fusion 360 Transitional Space

Having learnt the rendering process, I also added materials to my Fusion 360 model of the transitional space made in week 5.
I chose a natural oak finish complemented with glass on the front facing surfaces, thereby granting a view of the interior.
